Taking the UCAT in 2023? Here's our recommended prep timeline

The UCAT is one of the most important standardised tests for students looking to study medicine in the UK. It’s used by schools such as Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, etc.

While the UCAT can be taken from July to September, we recommend students should start prepping already, as you might be too busy with exam preparation during the summer period.

Below is a a comprehensive overview timeline for UCAT preparation, which outlines the key milestones and deadlines in a clear and concise manner. This will help you maximise your preparation period, allowing you to stay on track and ultimately achieve your desired test results.

Suggested Study Plan (February to Test Date)

For international students who are beginning their preparation this February for UCAT 2023, the following timeline can help guide you in your preparation journey.

2-3 Months Before the Test (February to April 2023)

  • Gain an understanding of the UCAT format, content, and scoring system by researching and familiarizing yourself with the material.
  • Identify your strengths and weaknesses and set a realistic target score.
  • Start practicing with UCAT preparation materials, including mock tests.
  • Consider enrolling in a UCAT preparation course for extra support and guidance.

1-2 Months Before the Test (May to June 2023)

  • Regularly review and practice UCAT material to improve your skills.
  • Take mock tests to assess your progress and identify areas for improvement.
  • Focus on strengthening your weaker areas and continue practicing.

1 Month Before the Test (July 2023)

  • Increase the intensity of your preparation by taking more mock tests.
  • Seek feedback from a tutor to see where you can make further improvements.
  • Stay organized, focused, and minimize distractions in the final month before the test.

Key Dates to Remember

  • UCAT Test Booking: 20 June – 21 September 2023
  • UCAT Testing Period: 10 July – 28 September 2023

Remember that starting your preparation later than 6-12 months before the test may make it more challenging to adequately cover all of the content and build confidence before the test. However, with dedicated effort and careful planning, you can still make progress and reach your target score.
